"So far I like it alot" 2009-08-23

Cuisinart DCC-1100 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker, White

I read all the reviews and decided to buy this one. BedBathBeyond had them for $59 less 20%, so why not?

I bought the model with the glass carafe, not the thermal carafe, because I like to see whats in the pot and keeping it hot for 4 hrs is all I need. Plus 12 cups is better than 10 if you have guests. White gets dirty but it goes with my kitchen.

After 2 days, it works fine. It brews fast, stays hot, and makes little noise.

It uses cone filters which I think make better coffee than the baskets. It uses a charcoal filter for the water. I use filtered water but I guess more filtering can;t hurt.

The only complaint I have is the lid on the pot. It has to be pushed on and peeled off. Maybe this is for safety? But I like my old pot where I could use my thumb to lift the lid to empty, add back coffee, rinse it out, etc. But this is only a minor nuisance.

Maybe those reviewers who had this product die after a few months are correct. But for now, I am very pleased with this product .. has the best combination of cost, features, looks.

"Best drip machine under $200?" 2009-08-22
By T Boyer (Seattle)
To make drip coffee, a machine has to do just two things well -- heat the water adequately, and disperse the hot water over the grounds. Oddly, most coffee makers fail at one or the other. This Cuisinart does both pretty well, which is why it is probably the best machine on the market right now under $200 (and the reviews at Amazon testify to that).

TEMPERATURE: The overwhelming majority of brands do not heat the water adequately -- if the water at the grounds is only getting to 175-180 degrees, you will have sour, weak coffee. Ideal temperature is around 202-205. Using a digital thermometer, I measured the DCC-1100 at 197 in the filter basket, which is quite good.

DISPERSION: The second task is showering the hot water over the grounds somewhat evenly. Many coffee makers just stream it in from a mini-faucet, so they overbrew the grounds in the center of the filter and neglect the grounds around the edges. Result is weak, slightly bitter coffee. The very expensive Capresso machine has this problem -- it heats water to nearly 200 degrees but delivers that water poorly. The Capresso, which costs close to $200, makes mediocre coffee (at least it did for us). The Cuisinart isn't perfect in this regard but it does have a "shower head" design that disperses the water pretty well.

One other tip, which applies to all drip machines: Don't start with cold water. Room temperature is good. You can do this by running the tap partly warm, or by pouring the water the night before and letting it get to room temp. It gives the heating element a much better chance of getting the water to a good brewing temp.

 "Nice Features" 2009-08-21
By Mary Ellen Loberger
We were very happy with our Braun 12 cup coffee maker which died short of it's 5th year. We searched everywhere for a quality 12 cup coffee maker only to learn that they are hard to find! The reviews on the Cuisinart were very positive and the price was decent. We are very pleased with this coffeemaker. The coffee actually tastes a lot better than our old Braun unit. There is no spilling when you pour a cup either. We use the programming feature and it works like a charm. The only slightly negative aspect is that when you program it for the morning, it turns on and makes coffee, then when the coffee is ready it beeps 5 times pretty loudly. This beeping actually is what wakes me up in the morning. I wish I could turn that beeper off - it wakes up the dogs too! Other than that really loud beeping, it is a great coffee maker and I recommend it.

 "Outstanding!" 2009-08-20
By Sara W. Nagy (Bridgeport, CT)
This is without a doubt, the best coffee maker I have purchased in the past 35 years (I am 61). I have owned Krups, Braun, Mr. Coffee and a couple of cheapies over the years and this is far superior. The carafe is heavy enough you don't feel it will shatter with a sharp glance. The gold filter and coffee holder are easy to use and remove...it's easy to fill with water and coffee. The controls (ok, it took me a day or two to "get" what I had to do) are straightforward. The coffee is delicious. The only thing I would warn serious coffee drinkers is, the little scoop thing is totally inadequate. I use almost 2 Tbls. of grounds for each cup....dark roast...and it is fabulous! I actuially went to buy the 1200 at Bed Bath and Beyond and got this one by mistake, but I am totally happy! I would assume the 1200 is just as good. The price was also terrific!

 "Disappointed" 2009-08-19
By D. foley (illinois)
OK, I knew that the hole for the water was small, so I won't complain about that. However, I have had this coffee makes app 5 mos., and for the last 2 mos., the base where the coffee pot sits has the black finish coming off. I have never used anything other than a dry towel to clean, yet the finish is coming off. Additionally, I followed the directions to clean when the light came on, and after 4 cycles of water/vinegar mix, the clean light still won't shut off. No way it's that dirty.
