"Protect your cabinets from the steam" 2010-07-29

I would have given this coffee maker 5 stars except for one problem. It makes great coffee, looks good and is very easy to program, but during the brewing cycle it puts out a lot of steam from the vents on the top. My wood cabinets are only 16 inches above the counter and the intense heat and steam will damage the finish over a short period of time.
The solution is to pull the coffee maker out from under the cabinet during the brewing cycle and put it back once the coffee is made. When I moved the coffee maker, the counter where it had been was quite hot.
"Great value, great HOT cup of coffee" 2010-07-27

I bought two of these in December 2009, one for self, one for son.
We make 2-3 pots of coffee per day in my house, he makes one.
Given how poorly some of the coffee makers we've owned in the past have performed, and how short their life-spans were I thought I'd wait a while to review this one.
After eight months I can say we are very, very pleased with this coffee pot. We've had nicer looking coffee makers to be sure, and we've had much more expensive coffe makers as well.
I did a lot of research before buying this particular coffee maker in hopes I wouldn't waste hard-earned money on a piece of junk.
This is an easy to program, easy to use, easy to clean coffee maker. The best feature to me is the option to brew 1-4 cups via a separate cycle (which runs the water through twice and gets it VERY hot) and makes a nice bold cup of coffee.
I love that it has a built-in water filter to rid the coffee of the nasty tasting/smelling chemicals in municipal water. I love the gold filter. I love the price! I love that the spout doesn't dribble and drip coffee all over the place after you pour (you'll notice this most when you realize how clean the "hot plate" part of the coffee maker stays...no nasty stain build up or burnt smell. I love that it tells you when it needs to be cleaned. I love that my coffee comes out tasting clean, rich and is VERY hot.
The only thing I can think of that is at all negative is that removing the lid to the carafe is not an intuitive process...I fought that thing for the longest time trying to remove it to run the carafe through the dishwasher. You have to life it from the rear by the handle. Once you've done it once, it is no problem at all...just different from most carafes.

Well, this is very disappointing. I purchased this coffeemaker in December of 2009 and it quit working today, July 2010.
This Cuisinart product will deliver a great cup of coffee with a few bothersome traits. You will need to live with the fact that it drips from the basket down the back wall during brewing. Since this liquid seeps into the hot plate area you will eventually see white oxidation/discoloration on the plate.
As another reveiwer mentioned, the lid to the pot is designed so that you can't actually empty the water completely from the carafe when filling the reservoir, minor, yet still irritating.
I have followed all recommended care instructions since purchasing this item, once it signals it's cleaning time I put it through the process following the instruction booklet steps exactly. I purchased two boxes of replacement filters and a new white carafe lid shortly after this item arrived. Cuisinart fans will already know their white plastic lids stain something awful in a very short period of time. It's good to have a new one at the ready when you can't stand the brown staining any longer.
Although this product comes with a warranty, my purchase price of about sixty dollars less the ten dollar fee Cuisinart wants just to look at it, not to mention shipping costs make it a non-issue in regard to return. I'm still steaming over the boxes of filters sitting in a kitchen drawer, they were not cheap folks. I will once again spend hours online looking for a new coffeemaker and hoping I can forget what a great cup of coffee this pot delivered.
"Cuisinart DCC-1100 Coffee maker" 2010-07-22
By Brenda (Omaha, NE United States)
After much research on coffee makers I bought this one. I am giving this 3 ½ to 4 stars because while the coffee tastes good, there are a few things about the machine that I don't like. Here's what I think:
1. It is a very nice looking coffee maker and is slightly narrower than my old one. It comes in white which is what I was looking for (very disappointed with the choices in white overall).
2. Some have complained about the small water pouring opening. While it is pretty small, I have not had any problems when using either the pot to fill the water or a cup. Just make sure you are watching where you pour and you shouldn't have any problems.
3. I really like the pot itself. I haven't had any spills while pouring what-so-ever! If you take the lid off the pot a lot you may see some spills later as the lid becomes looser, but so far so good.
4. I wish the water level markings on the side were a different color. They are a pale white (almost clear) and you can't tell how much water you are putting in until the water reaches the line, or you get right up to the machine.
5. The controls on the front of the maker are pretty easy to figure out (I set the coffee maker before even reading the manual). However, anyone with arthritis might have problems turning the small knob on the front. It is very stiff to turn and if you need glasses for close up you may have problems reading the positions. I do not like the knob. If you forget to turn the knob to the correct position after doing something else (say setting the programmer) then you will not have coffee ready in the morning. Luckily, I always program my coffee to be waiting for me first thing in the morning so unless the power goes out or I need to clean the machine I can just leave the knob in the Auto position and just hit the On/Off button to have coffee. If you want to program your coffee to be ready at the same time every day the programming will remember the time so you don't have to reset it every day (I like this!). The clock is also very small, and again, if you need glasses you need to pay special attention to whether the "p" is there or not for P.M. or A.M.
6. The coffee tastes great! I don't even use the provided filter because they are pricey ($9.99 for 2). If you have really bad tasting water I would recommend using the filter or using filtered/bottled water. Even after two hours the coffee still doesn't taste burnt to me.
7. The coffee comes out of the machine VERY hot. It is much hotter than my old machine and after 30 min. of sitting on the burner, can (and has), burned my tongue. I went with a regular burner instead of a thermal pot because I like hot coffee and want my coffee hot without warming up the pot first.
8. The cost was not too bad for my new machine [...]!
9. I'm not sure how the cleaning works because I haven't used it yet, but I'll see.
10. I do miss how my old machine had two lids (1 for the grounds, and 1 for adding water). It allowed me to get the machine ready without pulling it out from under my cupboard. I have to pull this one out to get it ready which is a pain, but not that painful. The machine slides nicely without being too loose. The cord is pretty short, so be prepared to keep your machine right next to the outlet. I'm not real happy keeping a machine that uses water and steams right next to an outlet!!!.
Overall I'm satisfied so far with my new machine, I'm just nitpicky and want things my way. Hopefully this machine will last - I find that anymore most machines only last 6 months to 1 year, which just shows how cheaply they are made nowadays, no matter how much they cost.
"Very Expensive CHEAP" 2010-07-21
By John B. Swetland
It lasted half as long (6mo) as the cheapest coffee maker we have ever owned. After almost two weeks after contacting their (CON-air) customer service inform me that if I returned (my expense) the defective item and paid return shipping($10) they would (at their leisure) send me a replacement. As for the coffee maker while it work, it made coffee just like the inexpensive coffee maker. The Cuisinart cost me about eleven cent for each cup of coffee it made.
